Of Newton and Falmouth, the Honorable William A. McCarthy died July 11, 2015, at home with his loving family. Survived by his beloved wife Laurie E. (Laughlin) McCarthy. Father of the late William A., Jr. and wife Heather C.; Kathleen M.; Peter D. and wife Jennifer M.; and Stephen J. and wife Katherine A.; all of Newton. Also survived by grandchildren William A. (Liam) III, Thomas J., Caitlyn E., James M., and Henry J.; sisters Mary J. Doherty (and late husband John P.) of Newton and Eileen J. Plunkett and husband Robert W., Jr., of Belmont; and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by parents Kathleen M. and William J., originally of Ireland, and brother James M.
A lifelong Newton resident and Our Lady Help of Christians parishioner, Bill graduated Our Lady's High School (1950), Boston College (1954), and BC Law School (1960). Served as Special Agent in U.S. Army Counter Intelligence Corps (1954-1956) in France and Austria. A trial attorney in private practice until 1977, Bill served as a Waltham District Court Clerk until appointment by Governor Dukakis to the Mass. Department of Industrial Accidents. He served 33 years as Commissioner, Administrative Law Judge, and retired in 2011 as Senior Judge.
Devoted to friends and family. He supported BC, as alumnus and teacher; the Newton YMCA as a member of the Board of Directors for 13 years; his parish as Council member and CCD teacher for 33 years; the development of worker's compensation law; the cause of special needs housing, as Board Member of the NWW Committee; and an array of charitable endeavors.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 Am on Thursday, July 16, 2015 at Our Lady Help of Christians Church, Newton. Visiting hours at Eaton & Mackay Funeral Home 465 Center Street, Newton Corner, on Wednesday, July 15, 2015, 4pm-8pm.
