Sonia (Alexandrian) Cardinali, of Needham, passed away on Friday, February 3, 2017 at the Stanley R. Tippett Hospice House in Needham. She was 83 years old. Born in Iran, she was a daughter of the late Zaghik (Ayvazian) and Hovsep Alexandrian.
After the death of her father, she went to work for the British Petrol Company in Iran and helped to support her family. The family did not have much by way of money, but they had each other. Her family would say she was a sister and father helping her mother bring up the family. She was always selfless, this began early in life. Always doing for her family. She was very giving, her favorite thing to say (in Armenian), "I want to see you enjoy while my eyes are open."
She came to the US to go to beauty school. When she came she lived with her brother, Kigham and his wife, Helen. She moved out one night and settled in at the YWCA in Boston. A dance was taking place and she met Walter Cardinali, who she did not like initially. Eventually they married and she made her wedding gown. Sonia was embraced as a daughter by her in-laws, the late Aldo and Eside Cardinali and as a sister by her brother in law Carl Cardinali. They first lived on Brookline Street in Needham and in 1965 they started building their home on Elder Road where they still live.
Although she did work as a hairdresser, she eventually started to work at Babson College doing food service for Marriott, she loved being with the kids. After 25 years she retired. She loved gardening and her yard would be filled with flowers, she enjoyed sitting on the patio with Walter and could find them out there all day everyday all summer long. Before a decline in her health she enjoyed going to the Needham YMCA and to Dunkin Donuts to meet friends. She loved spending time with her family, close friends and especially "her Anthony".
The beloved wife for 55 years of Walter M. Cardinali, she was the loving mother of Cora and her husband Frank Armenio of Franklin and the cherished grandmother of Anthony Armenio. Daughter of the late Hovsep and Zahig Alexandrian, Sonia was the sister of Shahen and his wife Lilik, Serosh and his wife Irmgard "Immy", Helen and the late Kigham and his surviving wife Annie. Daughter in law of the late Aldo and Eside Cardinali. Sister in law of Carl Cardinali. Also survived by 9 nieces and nephews. Funeral from the Eaton Funeral Home, 1351 Highland Ave, Needham, on Thursday February 9th at 9 am, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Joseph Church at 10 am. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours in the funeral home on Wednesday from 4-7 pm. Interment at Needham Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sonia's name may be made to a charity of your choice.
