Sally E. (Sullivan) Benson, 80, of Newton, MA, died peacefully at home on Monday, August 17, 2015, surrounded by family and friends.
Born in Boston on May 27, 1935, the only daughter of Joseph R., Sr. and Esther M. (Treadwell) Sullivan, Sally grew up in Hyde Park, the youngest in a family of four. The Sullivans later moved to Arlington where Sally graduated from Arlington High School, class of 1953, and where she eventually married her loving husband of 58 years, Frank Benson.
Frank's work for Honeywell took them to California and back again twice while their own family grew to include six daughters. In 1971, they settled permanently into a house in Newton, large enough for each child to have her own room. The family soon joined Grace Church where Sally was instrumental in a project to create needlepoint kneelers for the altar. After the girls were old enough to manage on their own, Sally took a job at Hilles Library, Harvard University, where she worked bringing order to chaos for 27 years. Sally loved the ocean. In her youth she visited Crane & Wingaersheek beaches with her friend and future sister-in-law, Charlotte Sullivan. Later she and Frank vacationed at Damariscotta and other locations in Maine. More recently, even with limited mobility, she enjoyed day trips to Revere Beach & Castle Island where she could bask in the clear blue sky and the bracing salt air. Sally loved to cook and share recipes. She had an inventive spirit in the kitchen, and was famous among her daughters for always changing the recipe a little. She delighted in a good meal shared with family and friends. Her presence at future such gatherings will be sorely missed.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Frank Benson; her loving daughters and their husbands Kirsten & Bob Knell of Watertown, MA; Karyn & Jim D'Entremont of NH; Audrey & Bob Savill of Framingham, MA, Rebel Stewart of Athol, MA; Amy Benson & Tom Lingner of Belmont, MA; Katherine & Jack Sweeney of Arlington, MA; twelve grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Albert & Charlotte (Lansil) Sullivan of Concord, MA; her sisters-in-law Jean (Black) Sullivan & Barbara (Aldrich) Sullivan; nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins. She was predeceased by two brothers, Joseph R. Sullivan, Jr., & Richard A. Sullivan.
A memorial service in Sally's honor will be held at Grace Episcopal Church, 76 Eldredge St, Newton, MA, on Monday, August 24th at 11AM. A small reception will follow in the church hall. All are welcome. Interment will take place in a private ceremony in the Coleman Memorial Garden at Grace Church at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Northeast Animal Shelter, 347 Highland Avenue, Salem, MA, a place and a cause that were important to Sally.
