Richard S. Johannes, MD, "Dick", of Newton Center, passed away at home on July 12, 2017. Dick was born in Rhinelander, WI on November 10, 1946 and was raised in Marshfield, Wisconsin on a dairy farm. He attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison where he received his BA degree in 1968. He continued his education in Baltimore, where he received an MD from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1972, and a MS in engineering from the Whiting School of Engineering, Johns Hopkins University in 1986. He served on the Osler Medical Service at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he was chief resident for two years. At Johns Hopkins, he was a member of both the Gastroenterology Division and the Department of Biomedical Engineering. While there, he received both the Dean's Award for Excellence in Teaching and Daniel Baker Jr. Award for providing outstanding clinical care.
While at Hopkins, Dick met his wife of 33 years, Catherine "Kay" Bishop. Dick and Kay moved to Newton, MA in 1989, where they raised their two children. He joined the GI Division at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in 2003, and was an Instructor at Harvard Medical School. Dick was Vice President of Clinical Research at Cardinal Health at CareFusion. While he was there, Dick received the Elliot M. Stone Award for Excellence in Health Data Leadership in 2013 for his work on outcome metrics for use in comparative hospital performance reporting.
Dick was passionate about many things in his life, the first being his children. His lifelong love of trains began as a child and continued throughout his life. He was a talented model railroader and was a long-term member of the HUB Division of the Northeastern Region of the National Model Railroad Association. He served two terms as president and was a board member for many years. Despite his numerous publications in the medical field, the publication that gave him the most joy was his article in Model Railroad Craftsman.
In addition to all his talents, his love of baseball was extreme. He loved the Red Sox, and all of the Boston sports teams. Dick was a kind, funny and gentle person. His enthusiasm was infectious. He never met anyone he didn't like. He will be missed greatly by his family, patients, friends and co-workers.
Dick is survived by his wife Catherine "Kay" (Bishop) Johannes and his children: Caleb Johannes of Brooklyn, NY, Claire Johannes of Cambridge, MA, Jennifer Phillips of Chicago, IL, and Joshua Phillips of Milwaukee, WI.
