Gary W. Petrini of Needham, MA passed away peacefully on October 3, 2017. He was 81.
Gary was born in Needham on September 2, 1936, the only child of Lee Petrini and Eva Petrini Hosmer. He was the loving and cherished husband of Lynn Grasser Petrini for 54 years. Gary was a lifelong Needham resident who also enjoyed homes on Priscilla Beach in Plymouth and in Naples, FL. He attended Needham public schools and then Needham High School where he wrestled, played baseball and football and graduated in 1954. He graduated from Babson College in 1957 thanks in part to a scholarship from the Town of Needham. Gary later studied Law at Suffolk University in Boston and Business at Harvard Business School. Gary served in the US Army Reserves from 1958 to 1962.
For nearly 60 years, Gary worked at L. Petrini and Son, Inc. which later became Petrini Corp where he served as President and CEO. The family real estate development business, now in its third generation, was a source of great pride. Those who worked with Gary will remember his passion and his strong and dynamic leadership style. There are many families in and around Needham who came into contact with Gary through his professional work and later became good friends.
Gary was a tireless supporter of his hometown and over the years was involved in numerous Needham-related charitable efforts. He was a long-time Town Meeting member. He was active with the Needham Community Council which presented him with a Distinguished Service Award in 1990. He served on the Needham Park & Recreation Commission and was instrumental in the construction of the original Rosemary Lake pool. Gary served for many years on the Needham Permanent Public Building Committee which oversaw the re-construction of several schools and municipal buildings. He was a Trustee of the Glover Memorial Hospital prior to its evolution as the Beth Israel Deaconess Needham Hospital. Gary was a member for many years of the Needham Business Association and was honored as their Member of the Year in 2001. He was a Trustee of the Needham Historical Society and was an honored member of the Needham Exchange Club which once named him their Man of the Year. Gary believed that Needham had been good to him and in return he dedicated much of his time, energy and resources back to the Town.
Gary was the beloved husband of Lynn Grasser Petrini for 54 years. The devoted father of Lisa and her husband Rob of Dover; Greg and his wife Mary of Dover; and Lauren and her husband Bob of Needham. Loving grandfather of Olivia, Emily and Carly Bell; Madeline, Curt, and Lee Petrini and Annie, Will, Jack and Ned Hentschel. Gary derived great joy from his extended family and closest friends. His 10 grandchildren will long remember their beloved Grampy stationed at the kitchen table with a newspaper and an ice coffee quietly overseeing the bustle around him. The foundation of Gary's loving family was built on his marriage to Lynn, the undisputed love of his life. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St Joseph's Church at 1360 Highland Avenue, Needham, Saturday October 7, 2017 at 10AM. Services will conclude with a burial at the Needham Cemetery in Needham. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours on Friday October 6th from 4PM - 8PM at the Eaton Funeral Home at 1351 Highland Avenue, Needham.
The Petrini family wishes to thank Gary's excellent caregivers including those at North Hill in Needham and at the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital.
