David J. Sexton, 77, of Needham, Massachusetts, died peacefully Sunday, March 5, 2017 after a long illness. He was the beloved husband of Gloria (Gamel) Sexton for 50 years.

He was born to David and Ellen Sexton in Brookline, and attended Cathedral High School in Boston, MA. He received his BA from Stonehill College in Easton, MA, and his MA from Rutgers University Stonier School of Banking.

David began his career at Liberty Mutual Insurance as a computer programmer. He went on to work at Honeywell Corporation, Fidelity Investments, Coopers and Lybrand, and State Street Corporation.

At State Street, David rose to Chief Information Officer, and served for over 20 years. He helped to transform State Street from a traditional regional bank into an investments and securities processing technology powerhouse with global reach. His work was noted in numerous publications including Investors Weekly and a case study from Harvard Business School.

David was a competitive athlete, first distinguishing himself as a noted point guard for Cathedral High. He excelled as a pitcher in baseball, and tried out as a walk-on for the Red Sox. He was also a talented golfer, winning club championships at George Wright Golf Club (Hyde Park, MA) and Needham Golf Club. Golf was a passion that he passed on to several of his children.

In his retirement, he continued to stay involved in both his business and sports interests. He officiated for the Massachusetts Golf Association and was a mentor for the Management Consulting Field Experience program at Babson College. He was a long standing member of Brae Burn Country club, Newton MA, and was an avid bridge player.

Besides his wife Gloria, he is survived by his five children, David Sexton Jr., Julie Redlitz, Donna Sexton Gaulin, Matthew Sexton, Michael Sexton, their spouses, and ten grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother James Sexton and sister Helen McLaughlin.

His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Mon March 13 at 10:30 AM in St. Joseph Church Needham. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Visiting hours will be in the Eaton Funeral Home 1351 Highland Ave on Sun 2-6 PM. Interment Needham Cemetery.
