David Bontecou Wray of Needham, Massachusetts, peacefully passed away at home on Friday, December 22. Dave was born in Paris, France, to Ernestine Haynes and Charles Gregory Wray. Dave, a widower since July 2015, was married for 60 years to Patty Bundy Wray. The couple lived in Chestnut Hill, New York City, and settled eight years ago at North Hill in Needham. Dave is survived by his three children and their spouses: David B. Wray, Jr. and his wife Deidre of Walpole, Massachusetts; Susan W. Smith and her husband Charles Daniel of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and Elizabeth W. Lawrence and her husband John Wesley of Holliston, Massachusetts; and his six grandchildren and four great grandchildren: Bradley Rosemary Wray Cooke; David B. Wray III; Charles D. Smith III; Katherine Hollister Smith Bligard; Kelsey T. Lawrence; John W. Lawrence III; Heidi R. Cooke; Wallace R. Cooke; Charles D. Smith IV; and Bryan W. Smith.
A Millbrook School '48, Amherst College '52, and Harvard Business School '55 graduate, Dave retired after a fulfilling and accomplished career as Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada's Chief Investment Officer for the United States. Dave started his investment career at New England Mutual Life Insurance Co., relocated to New York for two years where he served as the Director of Equity Research at Lazard Freres & Co., and the after moving back to Boston in 1973, Dave spent 23 years at Sun Life until his retirement in 1996. In addition to board of director positions at various financial institutions, including National Grange Mutual Insurance Co., Massachusetts Casualty Insurance Co., and Cambridge Bancorp, Dave was an enthusiastic supporter of education. He was on the board of trustees at Dexter School during the search for the school's current location in Brookline, and at the Chestnut Hill and Brimmer and May Schools. In retirement, Dave enjoyed spending time with family, found constant fascination in the stock market, and very successfully participated in many, many duplicate bridge events.
A memorial service will be held for Dave on January 5 at 1:30 p.m. at the Church of the Redeemer, Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dave's memory may be made to the Wray Family Scholarship Fund at Dexter Southfield School, 20 Newton Street, Brookline, Massachusetts, 02445.
