Carolyn G. Greene of Needham passed away peacefully on February 20, 2018 at North Hill after a brief struggle with cancer. Carolyn was born September 28, 1927, in Lowell, MA, and grew up in Billerica, MA. She was the daughter of Leslie and Mildred Gross.
Carolyn graduated from Howe High School in Billerica at age 16 and commuted to Boston University where she was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Society and earned a BA magna cum laude in English Literature. She worked at Liberty Mutual Insurance for 8 years developing training programs for underwriters. During this time she embraced independence and city life, living in an apartment on Commonwealth Ave with two girlfriends. One summer she and her roommates rented a tiny cottage in Rockport and her life was forever changed when she met Ray B. Greene, Jr., the love of her life, at a beach party.
In 1956 she married Ray and soon they moved to Needham, his hometown, to start a family. Carolyn focused on raising her family, caring for aging relatives, and volunteering. She volunteered as a Girl Scout leader, as a librarian in the Needham Public and Boston Public schools, and at the Congregational Church of Needham, sharing her famous cookies with many. She actively supported her husband's exuberant fundraising for the Needham YMCA, Colby College and the church. In her later years after Ray's untimely death at the age of 64, Carolyn traveled with friends and enjoyed reading, needlepoint, and lavishing her granddaughters with love and attention. She nurtured family bonds and created many warm memories, especially at the family home in Chatham. She treasured her family and many dear friends including her bridge group of over 50 years.
Carolyn is survived by her sister, Martha Hentz of Northampton, MA, her three daughters and sons-in law: Susan and James Turner of Medfield, Judith and Scott Stewart of Needham and Elizabeth and Michael Roos of Andover. She also is survived by six granddaughters: Kelsey and Sarah Turner, Ramsay Stewart, Carolyn, Hannah and Amy Roos, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Ray; sister, Anne Gross; and brother, Robert Gross. Burial is private. A celebration of Carolyn's life will be held on April 7, 2018 at 11 a.m. at the Congregational Church of Needham. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Ray B. Greene, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund, Colby College, 4372 Mayflower Drive, Waterville, ME 04901, attn. Rick Wells or to the Congregational Church of Needham, 1154 Great Plain Ave, Needham, MA, 02492.
