Tribute & Message From The Family

Roger Browne Hunt, Needham (1931-2018)
Dear husband, loving father, grandfather and friend-to-many died suddenly on May 7th. Born in New York City, he grew up in Riverside CT and attended Rye Country Day School. He went on to graduate from Phillips Academy Andover (1948), Harvard College (1952) and Harvard Law School (1955), and then served as sergeant in the US Army at Fort Bliss TX and in Verona, Italy; here, he developed a love of Venice that would last the rest of his life. In Boston, he practiced law at Haussermann, Davison & Shattuck from 1957 until joining Sullivan & Worcester in 1983. He served the greater Boston community throughout his career as Chair of the Needham Conservation Commission, Secretary and Life Trustee of The Trustees of Reservations, President of the Dedham Country and Polo Club, and a member of the Board of Overseers for the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
Roger enjoyed many happy summers with family and friends in Prouts Neck, Maine. An avid player of racket sports, a lover of birds and music, Roger showed spirit and engagement whether in consultation or competition.
He leaves his wife of 64 years, Janice Gayron Hunt (Lane), his four children--Susan G. Hunt of New York NY, Roger B. Hunt Jr. of Medfield MA, Julia (Lia) Hunt Zylstra of Dedham MA, and Sarah Hunt Broughel of Auburndale MA--and seven grandchildren: Roger B. Hunt III, Madelaine E. Hunt, Olivia Lane Hunt, Ian Hunt Zylstra, Simon Lane Zylstra, John C. Broughel and Luke Broughel.
There will be a memorial service Thursday, May 31 at 11:00 o'clock at Story Chapel, Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
To honor his memory, in lieu of flowers consider donations to the Neighborhood House Charter School, Dorchester, MA; or the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Roger was a great friend of our family and provided us with invaluable assistance over three generations. His passing leaves us all very sad.

Roger was a wonderful person. I got to know him in the late 60s when he and I and others started a Needham organization called Project Assist. Our purpose was to provide services for young people in the town, and Roger was a committed and indefatigable participant in our efforts.

We also had a social relationship, which included commuting to Boston on the train, social events, and legal organizations. Whenever I was with him, he brightened my day. My heart goes out to Janice and family. G

Roger Hunt was one of the finest men I have ever known. Kind, generous, thoughtful, intelligent, amiable, loving, humble. A great loss.

Deepest condolences to the Hunt family. RIP.

Dear Janice and family,

Jenna and I were so very saddened to learn today of Uncle Roger's passing earlier this week. He was a beloved member of our family. Gretchen, Dad, and I treasure the many wonderful memories we built with him in and around both Boston and Cape Cod. We share a love of family, the Red Sox, education, and many other passions.

You are very much in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Please know that my hope for all of you is that God wraps you in His arms and provides you comfort and warm memories of our blessed time with Roger.

Much love from the Schmidt and Robertson families
