Condolence & Memory Journal

Though late to this, I send condolences, too... Preparing to meet Harvard Lampoon friends this evening, I Googled Charlie and landed here. I first got to know him in 1965 during his long tenure as a trustee of the Harvard Lampoon. Almost 20 years later, he asked me to succeed him in that role, and thereby shifted my life trajectory in subtle and continuing ways, not least ensuring new friendships and ongoing acquaintance with dozens of additional undergraduate members (and leaders) of that organization than I would have otherwise known.

I am so sorry that I was unable to attend Charlie's funeral due to health reasons. Charlie and Maudie were lifetime friends. We met in Dover over sixty years ago. My children and I will never forget their kindness in sharing the beauty of Wellfleet with us. Charlie was famous for the sign he put out in front of the home that they allowed us to use for one memorable vacation after another. He made a neat and tidy sign painted in green letters that spelled "Cullen". What a welcome sight after the nine hour journey in the car from Pennsylvania! This family time of fun and precious relaxation was such a gift!
Uncle Charlie and Aunt Maudie will always be loved and remembered by me and my family.

In working for Charles for some 30ish years I learned to always bring your
"A" game when you are doing any task, no mater how menial.
His wit, wisdom, and love of nature will be remembered always.
He was a prime example of why his generation was dubbed the Greatest.

This so saddens me. Charlie was one of the most upbeat, erudite, charming and thoroughly decent men on this planet.

It had to happen, someday . . . though Charlie felt like the sort of larger-than-life presence who just might be with us forever. And so he shall, in fond memory.

Excelsior, Charlie!

I knew Charlie from Bookbuilders of Boston meetings and served with him on the Dover Town Report committee. He was a bright, articulate, committed, engaging gentleman. Rest in peace, Charlie.
