Tribute & Message From The Family

Neva W. Spinks, 95, of Newton, MA died peacefully on August 10, 2017 at Benchmark Senior Living in Acton MA with family by her side after a period of declining health.

She was born in Boonville, NY on August 4, 1922, daughter of Clarence Sheldon and Gertrude Quirt Weager. Neva attended school in Toronto, Ontario, Canada where she excelled as a student and was at the top of her class.

She married James M. Spinks on March 7, 1947 and moved to Newton Centre where they lived while raising their seven children. They spent their summers at their modest lake house on Lake Maspenock in Hopkinton MA enjoying water skiing, boating, and swimming.

Neva was a full time mother and homemaker but made the time to volunteer for various functions and events at her church, Trinity Church, in Newton Centre, where she also sang in the choir. She was also active in the Girl Scouts serving as troop leader during this time and was very involved in the Newton Youth Hockey program.

She was a loving and dedicated wife and mother, who served as a role model and inspiration for three generations of family. She was elegant, intelligent, and caring. She was passionate about jazz and especially loved jazz pianists. She loved doing the Sunday NY Times crossword puzzle and also enjoyed knitting, swimming, and walking. She played competitive bridge with her husband and was a bridge life master.

Neva is survived by her 2 sons, James Jr. and his wife Diane of Westford MA, and Jeffrey and his wife Jackie of Newton Centre MA, and by her 4 daughters, Vicki Hall and her husband Bruce of Rindge NH, Jennifer Carleton of Newton MA, and Laura Wilber of Colorado Springs CO, and Susan Topper and her husband Anthony of Wellesley MA, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. Neva is predeceased by her husband, James, and her oldest son, Earl.

A private Funeral Service to celebrate Neva's life will be held at Trinity Church Newton Center. Interment for both parents will occur at Newton Cemetery following the funeral.

Dear Vicki and entire Spinks family, I known you all since I was 5 years old. I'm heartbroken about Neva's demise. She was a survivor and hung in as long as she could. Thank you Neva for always making me lovely hams with pineapple and cloves at Xmas time. Much love.

I will always remember Aunt Neva, one of my mother's sisters. (And Uncle Jim.)
She was a wonderful aunt, and I still recall the conversations we had while I was staying with her and Uncle Jim in December in the early 70s. A life well lived, indeed.
