Tribute & Message From The Family

Alfred Witherspoon Scott, Jr. passed away peacefully at home on July 16, 2017. He was surrounded by his beloved wife Emily, and their children.

Born January 5, 1926, in Athens GA, Alfred will be remembered as a very loving husband and wonderful father, for his positive nature, kindness, generosity, respect for others, love of family and friends, and for his respect of nature and love of birds. He will also be remembered as an ophthalmologist and long time member of the Mass Eye and Ear Infirmary. He considered it a privilege to be a member of the Boston medical community and the Newton community.

Alfred was born in Athens, Georgia to Alfred Witherspoon Scott and Jane Sams Scott, and raised there with his brothers George Edward Scott and Richard Sams Scott. He graduated from high school at the age of 16, completed accelerated pre-medicine requirements at the University of Georgia by age 18, and was accepted into Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Scott completed his internship at Philadelphia General Hospital, where he met the love of his life, Emily Keller Hubbs, and they married in 1949. Alfred served as a US Naval physician at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, and then completed his residency at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. He started a private practice in Boston and was an Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School where he enjoyed teaching medical students for 18 years. He was actively involved in the Mass Eye and Ear Infirmary teaching both interns and residents, and was elected President of the Medical staff on two separate occasions. He retired from active practice at age 72.

A life-long naturalist, Alfred developed a special interest in bird watching, and traveled extensively with Emily compiling a life-list of birds. He played tennis since his childhood days at Dixie Camps in Georgia, and then at the Longwood Cricket Club in Chestnut Hill. Alfred and Emily moved to Newton in 1956, and became involved in their children's education in the Newton school system and began lifelong friendships with many neighbors (The Almosters). He was also a member of the 8 O'Clock Club, the Harvard Club, the Harvard Travelers Club and the Harvard Book Club.

Alfred is survived by his wife of 68 years, Emily Hubbs Scott, and their children Alfred Witherspoon Scott III (Fred) and his wife Katrina, Lynn Keyes Scott and her children Thomas Shuko Yoshikami and Emiko Mykle Yoshikami, Baldwin Keyes (BK) Scott and his wife Deborah, and their son Alfred William Scott, and Jennie Longstreth Scott.
